Mathematics Curriculum
Wilkinson Middle School's Mathematics curriculum is based on the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations. Students in middle school will be moving from the concrete topics of elementary math into the more abstraction concepts of algebraic thinking. Students will use a variety of resources such as computer programs and graphing calculators to explore middle school mathematics.

Pre-Algebra
Pre-Algebra is the bridge between previous mathematics concepts and skills and the abstract concepts of algebra. Students will become fluent in operations with integers and rational numbers. Similar figures will be used to perform indirect measurements, and produce scale drawings. Students will use proportional reasoning to prepare them for understanding, graphing and developing equations for linear functions. Using real-life data, students will develop statistical reasoning, make decisions about how data is best represented, and be aware of possible bias in statistical representations.
- Operations with Real Numbers
- Ratios, Rates, Proportions and Percents
- Similar Figures
- Statistical Analysis
- Algebraic Reasoning
- Linear Functions
Algebra A
Algebra is set up to help students understand the basic concepts of algebra and obtain proficiency in algebraic skills. Students may receive credit toward their Madison High School credits if they can demonstrate proficiency of Algebra through academic coursework, and by passing the Algebra exit exam; as set forth by the Madison Schools Board of Education. Graph paper, graphing calculator, and other manipulative will assist in problem solving and enhance student understanding of graphs, functions, equations, and inequalities. Topics covered in Algebra include:
- Evaluating expressions
- Solving one/two variable equations
- Properties of Linear functions; slope, systems of equations, and transformations of a line
- Properties of Quadratic functions, equations, and graphs
- Properties of Exponential functions, equations, and graphs
- Factoring and simplifying polynomials
