MEAP Information

This is not intended to be an exhaustive review of MEAP data, but simply an overview to help you better understand how to read Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) test scores.

Elementary/Middle School Tests

Elementary and middle school MEAP tests (4th, 5th, 7th and 8th grade students) are offered once each year in January-February. Retests are not offered. Tests must be taken in the appropriate grade (students must take 7th grade tests while in 7th grade; 8th grade tests while in 8th grade).

Each elementary and middle school MEAP test subject has its own set of performance categories:

Math- Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 (beginning with 2002 results)

Reading-Satisfactory, Moderate, Low

Science- Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 (beginning with 2002 results)

Social Studies-Level 1, 2, 3, and 4

Writing-Proficient, Not Yet Proficient

Elementary and middle school MEAP scores are reported as percentages (for example, a score of 42.5 means 42.5% of the students whose scores were included performed at the level of achievement shown).

"Number Included" / "Number Tested" - In accordance with strict criteria, schools may exclude some students' scores from summaries (the option to exclude scores will no longer be available to schools after the 2002-03 school year). Elementary and middle school MEAP scores are based solely on the number of "included" scores, not on the number of students who may have actually taken the test ("number tested").

* To assure confidentiality of individual students, scores that represent fewer than 10 students are intentionally omitted from this report.

High School Tests

High school MEAP tests are offered twice each year. Typically, high school students have three opportunities to test: in the spring of their junior year, in the fall of their senior year, and in the spring of their senior year.

High school MEAP scores are reported as raw numbers of students, not percentages. Scores are for an entire graduating class. High school MEAP scores are reported in four performance categories: Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 (Level 1 is the highest level). The number shown represents the highest level of achievement for this number of students after all retest opportunities (students may have taken the high school MEAP tests multiple times).

"Not Tested" / "Parent Exempt" - "Not Tested" means the student did not take the test (perhaps the student was ill the day of testing, for example). "Parent Exempt" means the student did not take the test because either a parent or the Individualized Education Program Team (for a special education student) actively determined that it was not in the best interest of the student to take the MEAP test.
